Films and Photos Wanted for Festival

The Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival is calling for amateur and professional filmmakers to enter its film competition before the deadline of June 39th. They are also looking for photo submissions. Details of the film competition here and details of the photo competition here. There are cash prizes in both cases. The Festival takes place 19-21 October 2007.

Just to give you a flavour of the Festival, here's a trailer for last years Festival on You Tube. It's called Fisherfield and it's well worth watching.

Luss Horseshoe

Dscn3981_1The change in the weather to cold, crisp and clear was too good an opportunity to miss. So yesterday I took advantage and headed up to Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond. Rising directly out of the village is Beinn Dubh and the Luss Horseshoe. It's a wonderful walk, not particularly high but with great views in every direction. Loch Lomond was glorious and the clear conditions meant the Arrochar Alps were particularly splendid.

I'll post further about the walk but this morning I've been concentrating on getting some of my photos onto the photo sharing site Flickr which I posted about earlier in the week. You can see the results here and I hope the photos give you some of the enjoyment I experienced on a great days walking.

Scottish Mountains on Flickr

For many hillwalkers a camera is an essential piece of kit. It certainly is for me and I've got shoeboxes and shoeboxes of photos taken when I was doing my round of the Munros. Unfortunately this was before I owned a digital camera and these photos are now unseen and languishing in the attic. I suspect I will struggle to guess where the photos were taken should I ever get round to trying to organise them. Even since I got a digital camera I've been pretty lax in uploading them to online photo albums.

That's going to change now that I've discovered Flickr the photo sharing web site. I'm sure many readers will already know about it but it allows you to upload yor photos, tag them with key words and share them publically or privately. There's also all sorts of advanced features including geo mapping of photographs which allows you to place your photos on a map at the location they were taken. The implications for hillwalking is obvious - looking for photos of a particular area? Simply go to the mapping part of Flickr and see what's been posted there.

There are common interest groups that you can join and there are already several of interest to hillwalkers in Scotland. Its a rich source of material and great fun to browse - and I'm thinking of ways I can use it to enhance this blog. In the first instance I've added a rather nifty Flickr badge to my sidebar - you may have to scroll down a bit. It's an ever changing montage of photos from Flickr that belong to the Scottish Mountains Group. Click through to that page and you can see an excellent slideshow of contributions. If the photos of an individual contributor catch your eye, you can click through to see their albums.

More Photo Sites

Thanks to Armin and Steve for suggesting some more interesting photo sites. Armin points us to his own travel site, where there are outdoor and mountain photos and QT panoramas from his trips to Scotland.  Steve recommends two sites. The first by John Barnes has lots of photos of the Scottish mountains. The second by Arnt Flatmo has some fantastic pictures of Greenland, Iceland and European mountain ranges. Scroll down the page to get to the Scottish photos.

Munro Panoramas

I've come across a superb online gallery of panoramas of the Munros in winter. The photographer is Steven Russell and his photos show tremendous clarity and detail.
Looking at them I've decided to start another typelist of Online photo galleries of the Scottish mountains. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Photo gallery from Alan Kimber

I came across another excellent photo gallery - this time on the web site of mountain guide, Alan Kimber. You can access the gallery here. I particularly enjoyed the winter photos - they certainly whet the appetitite for the coming winter.

Mountain Photo Gallery Update

Smpg
The splendid Scottish Mountain Photo Gallery has recently added a number of new photo galleries. For those of you unfamiliar with the site, it's well worth a visit. The collection consists of over 1,800 high resolution photographs, photos, pictures, images, 360 degree views and QuickTime movie panoramas of mountains, islands, sea water lochs, fresh water lochs and rivers of Scotland.
Highly recommended.
