Reclassify the Munro's Story - Yet Again.
That hardy annual - should some of Scotland's mountains be reclassified as Munro's - has surfaced yet again.
Scotland on Sunday reports that geologists estimate that as Scotland's mountains are rising by 2mm per year hills such as Foinavon at 2999ft and Beinn Dearg at 2998ft may now have reached the 'magical' 3000ft mark. A spokesman for Ordnance Survey is quoted as saying that if anyone using high quality GPS systems can verify this then they would consider surveying the mountains again.
In turn John Fowler of the Scottish Mountaineering Club (the custodians of Munros Tables) is quoted
' On a matter like this, we would take our cue from the Ordnance Survey - we tend to review the definition of a Munro only when they publish new maps with more accurate heights. As far as Foinaven is concerned, it's still a superb walk whether it's a Munro or not and deserves to be popular.'
To me, the story is full of if, buts and maybe's. It's seems more of an attempt to publicise the fact that the newspaper today carries a supplement about hillwalking in Scotland.
